Healthcare
European healthcare systems spend on average 9% of their countries' GDP on healthcare provision, and costs are rising at an average of 5% per year. Balancing increasing demand created by ageing populations, new technologies and rising consumer expectations against the ability of the system to finance the additional resources required to meet this need is creating a major dilemma for policymakers. These dynamics present both significant opportunities and risks for the private sector. Whilst further growth in public sector outsourcing and private pay initiatives is likely, these will be accompanied by potentially tighter regulation and reimbursement pressures. Also, Europe is not homogenous in this respect with different regulatory, reimbursement and cultural factors often creating fragmented markets. We believe that there will be excellent growth prospects and consolidation opportunities for those private sector players that can offer flexible, efficient and innovative business models in this evolving environment. Bridgepoint has long experience of investing successfully across the European healthcare sector throughout cycles. Our sub-sectoral interests include:

Case study
Medica
Médica is one of Europe’s largest private operators of nursing homes with over 8,300 beds in more than 100 facilities spread throughout France and Italy. It provides nursing home facilities to individuals, typically over 85 years of age, requiring dependence-related or post-operative care. Bridgepoint acquired the group in a privatisation from ICADE, the property arm of the French State’s Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations in July 2003 in a transaction totalling €330 million.
