LGC has four divisions: Standards, Genomics, Science and Innovation, and Laboratory and Managed Services, providing reference materials, proficiency testing, genomics and analytical products and services. These underpin the safety, health and security of the public to customers in Pharmaceutical, Agricultural Bioscience, Food and Environment, Government and Academia and Security and Sports markets.
LGC is strongly positioned as market leader; through focussed acquisitions it has grown in the UK and internationally. Since Bridgepoint's investment in 2010, LGC has made several acquisitions: K-Bioscience, a leading provider of genotyping equipment and services to the agribusiness and pharmaceutical industries; HFL Sport Science, the world's largest sports drug surveillance laboratory; Industrial Analytical in South Africa, a reference materials provider focusing on the natural resources and industrial sectors; Quotient Bioanalytical Sciences, a leading provider of bioanalytical services across the fields of small molecules, biomarkers, biopharmaceuticals and microbiological testing to customers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology sectors; and more recently Dr Ehrenstorfer, the world's leading producer of pesticide and other organic reference materials. .
With a history dating back to 1842, LGC has been home to the UK Government Chemist for more than 100 years. It is the designated UK National Measurement Institute for chemical and bio measurement, providing metrology research, calibration and testing.
In December 2015 the company was sold to KKR.
