He was a member of the UK Parliament from 1992 to 2010. He served for five years in the Cabinet, firstly as Chief Secretary to the Treasury from 1998 to 1999 and subsequently as Secretary of State for Health from 1999 to 2003. He was also Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from 2004 to 2005.
He serves as a board advisor to Mars Incorporated, is a member of Ribera Salud's board and is senior advisor to PwC's UK Government and Health Industries practice.
He is Chancellor of Lancaster University and a former Chair of the UK Government's Social Mobility Commission.
